{"id":1243,"date":"2009-07-17T17:55:05","date_gmt":"2009-07-17T17:55:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/crankymonkeybutt.com\/wordpress\/?p=1243"},"modified":"2011-10-29T20:25:11","modified_gmt":"2011-10-30T01:25:11","slug":"scifi_old_mans_","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2009\/07\/scifi_old_mans_.html","title":{"rendered":"SciFi: Old Man&#8217;s War by John Scalzi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been reading his blog for awhile (have gotten some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2009\/04\/fantasy_the_for.html\">great<\/a> recommendations from it) so I decided to try out his (from a while ago) debut.<\/p>\n<p>It felt sooooo familiar that I kept checking my lists over and over to see if I had read it before and finally I realized that it was just really (REALLY) reminding me of Haldeman&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2007\/04\/sci_fi_the_fore.html\">The Forever War<\/a><\/strong>.  The difference for me being that it doesn&#8217;t have the strong underlying anti- (or &#8220;futility of&#8221;) war message.  i.e., This one is more about the surface story.<\/p>\n<p>Decently written but the dialogue felt very stiff to me.  One of the blurbs inside calls it &#8220;The Forever War with better sex.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I think I&#8217;ll like sequel The Ghost Brigades better, when I get around to that one, as that&#8217;s the part of this story that interested me the most.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been reading his blog for awhile (have gotten some great recommendations from it) so I decided to try out his (from a while ago) debut.
