(I may have skipped things like &#8220;CDs bought in foreign countries&#8221; and such.) But this makes those &#8220;give me some music ideas&#8221; emails less annoying.<\/p>\n<p>(with links to Snip commentary. sometimes.)<br \/>\n<u><\/u><\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Favorite Albums:<\/strong><\/u><br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nMatt Costa &#8220;Unfamiliar Faces&#8221;<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/04\/january_album_r.html\">Quirky and unexpected<\/a>. <u>Fave songs:<\/u> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/04\/song_of_the_day_3.html\">&#8220;Mr. Pitiful&#8221;<\/a> and &#8220;Miss Magnolia&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bon Iver &#8220;For Emma, Forever Ago&#8221;<\/strong> Swoon. I know all the cool kids had this album in 2007. I ain&#8217;t that cool, yo. Love <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/05\/february_album.html\">the album<\/a>, love him in concert (see Favorite Gigs category down at the bottom). Love love love. <u>Fave song:<\/u> Re: Stacks<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesse Malin &#8220;Glitter in the Gutter&#8221;<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/05\/album_jesse_mal.html\">Rockin&#8217;<\/a>. Can&#8217;t even pick a fave song, just love the entire thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fleet Foxes <\/strong>Listening to FF is like sitting in a field of daisies in 1973 while people around you kiss and weave each other bracelets. May be a bit &#8216;twee for some. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/08\/june_album_revi.html\">But it&#8217;s so pretty<\/a>!) <u>Fave Songs:<\/u> &#8220;White Winter Hymnal&#8221; &#8220;He Doesn&#8217;t Know Why&#8221; &#8220;Your Protector&#8221; &#8220;Oliver James&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Earlimart &#8220;Hymn &amp; Her&#8221; <\/strong>With every album they just get better and better. Pretty and intimate. <u>Fave songs:<\/u> &#8220;Time for Yourself&#8221; &#8220;For the Birds&#8221; &#8220;Town Where You Belong&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>My Morning Jacket &#8220;Evil Urges&#8221;<\/strong> I lovelovelove this album. But I did NOT like &#8220;Z&#8221;. At all. If you peruse le Internet, you may find that everyone who liked this album was not much of an MMJ fan before, and those who were, were greatly disappointed. Ah well. <u>Fave song:<\/u> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/11\/good_mood_song.html\">&#8220;I&#8217;m amazed&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin &#8220;Pershing&#8221;<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/07\/album_someone_s.html\">I didn&#8217;t even listen to this album until months after I bought it<\/a>. Which is just so wrong &#8216;cuz it&#8217;s so good. <u>Fave song:<\/u> &#8220;Heers&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carla Bruni &#8220;Comme si de rien n&#8217;etait&#8221; <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/10\/august_album_re_1.html\">Her french albums just take my breath away<\/a>. Why do I even pretend to try to learn this language? I&#8217;ll never sound like this when I speak. <u>Fave song:<\/u> &#8220;Tu Es Ma Came&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Submarines &#8220;Honeysuckle Weeks&#8221; <\/strong> Has the same intimate boy\/girl vibe of Earlimart but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/05\/favorite_album.html\">more poppy, more upbeat<\/a>. It just grew on me more and more as the year went by. <u>Fave songs:<\/u> &#8220;Swimming Pool&#8221; &#8220;You, Me and the Bourgeoisie&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keane &#8220;Perfect Symmetry&#8221; <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/11\/october_album_r.html\"> This one totally took me by surprise<\/a>. <u>Fave songs:<\/u> &#8220;Better than This&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/11\/some_lyrical_ad.html\">&#8220;Time to Go&#8221;<\/a> &#8220;The Lovers Are Losing&#8221;<br \/>\n<u><\/u><\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Runners Up<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n<li><strong>Billionaires &#8220;Really Real for Forever&#8221; <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/11\/september_album.html\">I would love to see these guys live.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nana Grizol &#8220;Love It Love It&#8221;<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/08\/august_album_re.html\">Upbeat! Fun times!<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Raconteurs &#8220;Consolers of the Lonely&#8221; <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/06\/april_album_rev.html\">I always wind up listening to Jack White&#8217;s various projects more than I expect to<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nada Surf &#8220;Lucky&#8221; <\/strong>Whole album is good.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/05\/february_album.html\"> &#8220;See These Bones&#8221; is such a great song.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Missy Higgins &#8220;On a Clear Night&#8221; <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/05\/february_album.html\">She&#8217;s got such a great voice<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meg Hutchinson &#8220;Come Up Full&#8221;<\/strong> First three songs just knock it out of the park. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/06\/april_album_rev.html\">Really lovely<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gnarls Barkley &#8220;The Odd Couple&#8221; <\/strong>Too bad it got such an abrupt release. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/04\/first_impressio_5.html\">I think it&#8217;s just as awesome as their first one.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Beck &#8220;Modern Guilt&#8221; <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/08\/august_album_re.html\">Really good, just never listened to it much<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Everlast &#8220;Love, War, and the Ghost of Whitey Ford&#8221; <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/10\/favorite_album_1.html\">This guy&#8217;s voice just kills me<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Frightened Rabbit &#8220;The Midnight Organ Fight&#8221; <\/strong>Would&#8217;ve been a total fave if I&#8217;d managed to buy it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/12\/best_album_i_wa.html\">before December<\/a>. Le sigh. And I absolutely LOVE &#8220;Backwards Walk&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u><strong>Favorite 2008 Artist Not Mentioned Anywhere Above: <\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong>Joseph Arthur <\/strong>who put out FOUR EPs <strong>(&#8220;Crazy Rain&#8221; &#8220;Could We Survive&#8221; &#8220;Vagabond Skies&#8221;<\/strong> and <strong>&#8220;Foreign Girls&#8221;<\/strong>) as well as joining with the <strong>Lonely Astronauts <\/strong>for a full album (<strong>&#8220;Temporary Peple&#8221;<\/strong>). Which puts him at ridiculous output levels, along the lines of Ryan Adams and Joe Purdy. I&#8217;d totally say that next time I wonder how I&#8217;m wasting all my time away, you could just yell &#8220;Concerts!&#8221; except I seem to have SERIOUSLY turned this trend around in 2009 (three months in and I&#8217;ve only been to two shows. What?!?). Anywho&#8230; 10 of those 70 were openers, so it was really only 60 shows. And 6 were at Monolith, 5 at Lollapalooza and 13(!) at Pitchfork, so you know, that&#8217;s really like seeing 24 sets at three shows so&#8230; Anyway, my favorites were:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n<li><strong>Bon Iver <\/strong> Who I saw three times but my favorite was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/04\/in_concert_bon_1.html\">the second time <\/a>which was at Lakeshore Theater, which is literally around the corner from home. and has seats. yay for both, says the old lady.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Crowded House <\/strong> Mostly because they sing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/05\/in_concert_crow.html\">my favorite song of all time <\/a>and I&#8217;ve only been waiting to see these guys live practically my entire adult life. And yes, I know it&#8217;s not the FULL original lineup.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Matt Nathanson <\/strong>More for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/03\/in_concert_matt.html\">his humorous banter <\/a>than for the tunes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Earlimart.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/08\/in_concert_earl.html\">So so pretty<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Avett Brothers. <\/strong>These guys could <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/11\/live_at_monolit.html\">fill up the world <\/a>with their sound.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Band of Horses. <\/strong>A truly magical moment at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/11\/live_at_monolit.html\">Monolith<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Great Lake Swimmers. <\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/09\/in_concert_grea.html\">FINAFUCKINGLY<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mumford and Sons. <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/09\/i_am_now_offici.html\">So<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crankymonkeybutt.com\/snip\/archives\/2008\/11\/english_folk_re.html\">unexpected<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is pretty redundant at this point, not only because it&#8217;s nearly the end of March, but considering I did monthly reviews of pretty much everything I bought in 2008, as well as occasionally posting thoughts on individual albums.
