Revolution gives ordinary people the false belief that they can remake not just themselves, their country, and the whole wide world but human nature itself. That such grand designs always fail, that human nature is immutable, that everyone’s idea of perfection is different — these truths are all for a time forgotten.

“Chorus line” of the day:
So your boyfriend has no clue / of how much I’ve been touching you…
–Her Space Holiday “Something to Do with My Hands”
I offered her chocolates and some beer…
“Tonight Let’s Dance” by Elefant …SOUNDS LIKE… David Bowie. Musically at least. But not Bowie-like lyrics.
One must take pride in being paradoxical.
So generally I hate movies made from books, and usually I hate movies made from movies (i.e., remakes, doh), but when it comes to tunes, I LOVE COVERS. What’s up with that?
Because a good song is a good song no matter who’s singing it? That’s my theory behind my irrational love of Danny Michel‘s (recommended to me by Brainy Alison) entire album of David Bowie covers.
The bonus of all this being that Michel’s originals are good too…
Thought while reading Proust.
“Adenoidal” gets the point across much better than “nasal”, don’t you agree?
Wait, Wait… June 18th edition (someday I will catch up).
The usual round-up of hilarity and information.
The Vermont Barter system: “I’ve got burlap, you’ve got granola.”
Phil the Spokessore. Oh my buddha*, too funny.
And the celebrity guest was Calvin Trillin, “the Susan Lucci of the Poet Laureate” world. Very, very humorous segment.
*Just a little shout-out to yankeefrog DWoo! 🙂
KEXP: Band of Horses (7/7).
Very little miscellaneous chit-chat. Lots of tunes.
I already liked them but listening to this made me want to go back and listen more. And should that not be the goal of a performance podcast?
They may wind up one of my favorite bands of the year!
Songs Titled “Trouble” on My iPod.
1. “Trouble” – Cat Stevens.
2. “Trouble” – Coldplay.*
3. “Trouble” – Joe Purdy.
4. “Trouble” (cover of Ray LaMontagne) – Kristin Hirsch.
5. “Trouble” – Pink.
6. “Trouble” – Ray LaMontagne.
7. “Trouble” (LIVE) – Ray LaMontagne.
Any coincidence that 5 of the 7 are sung by boys, and 6 of the 7 are written by boys? I think not!
*Why is this even on my iPod? I hate Coldplay.
Wait, wait… 6/11 edition. My question to you is, which is more mortifying?
Accidentally singing outloud (along w/ your iPod) on the El? Or laughing out loud so hard (also on the El) that you almost fall over (out of your seat!), due to the podcast you are listening to?
Here are some moments for you:
- Peter Segal(sp?): “First a note to our troops serving overseas. We were alarmed to read this week that Armed Forces radio might be cutting down on their talk radio offerings, including NPR, because surveys show that younger service members really don’t care for it. Guys, gals, you’re making a mistake. Someday this war will be over, and then you’ll be back home, and you’ll be at a cocktail party. And some attractive person is going to say “I’m really interested in traditional Appalachian* quilt making, do you know anything about it?” And then where’re you gonna be? The military trains you for war, we will train you for chat.”
- Paula Poundstone discussing how she had been searching for [the Iranian dude whose name I can’t remember with the $25 million bounty on his head. And I couldn’t spell it even if I could remember it].
- Talking about a Republican claiming that being anti-gay marriage is a civil rights issue (I think it was the new White House spokesman). Wait wait’s comment: “Gay marriage is a civil rights issue like prohibition was a happy hour issue.”
- Paula on the dichotomy “Gay Republicans”. “What is a Gay Republican? Do they beat themselves up in parking lots?”
- The segment on airbags for the crotch (on scooters). Too funny. Before it was clear they were talking about scooters rather than cars, Paula: “Am I driving wrong?”
- The producer of the Aristocrats’ mother’s standard compliment for something she actually didn’t like: “I just don’t know where they get the energy!”
- The fact that he (producer of the Aristocrats) has obtained the film rights for the Japanese kid’s book “Everybody Poops.”
- Jessica Simpson’s question to Pamela Anderson when they met recently: “How did you run so slow during the opening scenes of Baywatch?” Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha…………
I LOVE this podcast (even though I am obviously listening to it about a month behind! Pathetic being that it only comes out once a week!). And from a girl who never reads the paper or watches the news, that is very high praise for what is really a news quiz show!
*Which I would pronounce “App-a-laesch-an” but he pronounced “App-a-latch-ee-an”,
Today I am here to tell you that Matt the Electrician is HILARIOUS and AWESOME.
He opened for Bob Schneider last night.
Here are some examples of his awesomeness:
- He covered Jessie’s Girl by Rick Springfield, with a mid song monologue about his Hell’s Angel uncle basically beating him up for going to a Rick Springfield concert.
- And how beaten up he would have gotten had he bought the only T-shirt they were selling at the concert, a pink tanktop!
- He played a song about high school & drinking (prefaced with “This is a true story”), that highlighted things such as Strawberry Hill Boone’s Farm and Colt 45. I was only sad that he didn’t mention Mad Dog 20/20!
- He did several songs on a teeny tiny banjo!
Laugh out loud funny at times. Serene and thoughtful at others.
His blog and tour schedule and discography, etc., can be found here. The blog is sometimes very minimal, but has its own moments of brilliance, such as this:
and i just started reading it……
it’s mostly diary-style, taking place during the pre-pre-production for Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back……
it’s got cool hollywood gossip…..
and it creates that feeling like you’re sitting there listening to him tell you the stories in person….
i’ve always liked his movies…..
never considered myself a fanatic….
but while reading this book….
i get the feeling that we’re friends now…..
no, i don’t GET the feeling…..
it seems more intuitive than that…..
i wonder what me and Kevin are gonna do tomorrow?….
How funny is he? I love him! Go see him! Great show!
p.s. yes, Bob Schneider was also FANTASTIC but y’all must know about him already…
and p.p.s. you can also buy Matt the Electrician albums on iTunes. seriously. I checked! 🙂
