Tonight’s Soundtrack

Hefty doses of “Neon Bible” the awesome new album from the Arcade Fire. Molly, you’re right, I LOVELOVELOVE “Intervention” (damn, an organ entry gets me every time!), I also love “Windowsill”, love the lyrics of “Ocean of Noise” and oooo “The Well and the Lighthouse” I like that one too. The only track I’m feelin’ iffy about is “Antichrist Television Blues” which sounds a lot like Bruce Springsteen to moi.

I’m alternately listening to Neon Bible’s 11-songs with a one-song breather in the middle: “Communist Love Song” by Soltero (MP3 linked here), which is making me happy and breaking my heart at the same time (and ain’t that just the trademark of truly great songs). It starts out slow, but ends up all in a rush…

If you would stick up for me
In the face of great adversity,
Know that I would do the same,
Know we are the same.
If you would stick up for me,
Speak kindly and poetically,
You can be my personal
Ambassador to the world.
And if you’re ever less than certain,
I will be your Iron Curtain.
I will be your Berlin Wall,
And I will never fall.

Lyrics of the Day.

And some have said that true love is something we are sure of.
But my only hope lies in your being confused.

-“Vote” from the Submarines “Declare a New State”
Jen recommended this album to me ages ago; I bought it, liked it, but (for who knows what reason) didn’t wind up listening to it that much at the time. I am really digging it these days.

In Concert: Peter Mulvey and Chris Smither.

Went to see a couple of goofball male folk singers with Amanda the other night. Both have really deep husky voices Both are extremely talented guitar players. Both poked fun both in song and in banter at the current administration. Very enjoyable!
Amanda has a big crush on Mulvey and I have to say the man did have a very chiseled jaw bone and a very subtle sleepy sexiness. Like old Clooney before he got the ego to match.
Smither’s song “Origin of Species” had some of the best lyrics I’ve ever heard:
God said “I’ll make some DNA, they’ll use it any way they want
From paramecium right up to man
They’ll have sex, and mix up sections of their code; they’ll have mutations
The whole thing works like clockwork over time
I’ll just sit back in the shade while everyone gets laid
That’s what I call intelligent design…

Rachael, I think you’d like both of these guys.

I never expected Stevie Nicks.

There is this boy who lives down the hall from me, who lives in the opposite time zone. When I am leaving my house at the ungodly hours of 5:15, 5:45, 6:15 and the like, he has clearly either just gotten home, or never gone to bed, as he is blasting music and dancing around his apartment, and usually has guests over as well. (Yes, I’m jealous. Let’s move on before I get upset about it, shall we.) Hip-hop, rap, rock, alternative, he plays it all, but generally in the happy, hyper, loud and obnoxious mode. Yet this morning, I found myself stuck outside his door, listening to this sweet lilting chorus “Time cast a spell on you but you won’t forget me…

I thought “No. Seriously? No. Can’t be!” It was. Stevie Nicks “Silver Springs”, and good morning to you.

Song of the Day.

I hate everyone
All the people on the street
I hate you all
And the people that I meet
I hate you all
And the people that I know
I hate you all
And the people that I don’t
I hate you all
Oh I hate you all.
I hate most everybody
But most of all
I hate…
I hate…
I hate YOU.

How often do you hear “big stupid jerk” in the lyrics to a song? Priceless.
