(I found Bloc Party fun at first, but monotonous after a few listens). Think it’s a bit quieter/darker/more sensitive than BP. Try it.

I am always reluctant to post to the TV blog as it seems no one else posts lately so every post on a show will be by me (how boring), so then I wait a while to see if anyone else wants to post on it, and then by the time it’s clear that no one else is going to, it’s been so many days past the episode that it seems silly to bother. So lately I’m just posting on shows no one else watches anyway, so it’s not like I’m stepping on anyone’s toes. But then again, since no one else watches them, why am I posting as none of them will be interested in reading it?
Ah well.
Here’s where I posted this week on The Closer, Friday Night Lights, and The OC.
I bought the tickets because their Christmas album is one of my all-time faves. They were even quirkier in person than I could have imagined. But the music was lovely. And some of the songs I hadn’t heard before were lots of fun, particularly “Jesus Shaves” which I must now buy a copy of.
This came wrapped around my copy of “A Good Day Sailing” and I love it:
This record is a five-track EP by a group called Memphis. But they aren’t really a group, more of an idea or a thought you might have when you’re at work watching the rain fall and wondering what you might have been. No forget that. That’s not Memphis; Memphis is a place, a kind of haze, a southern place maybe but not the city itself, somewhere further south where you are a stranger and the evenings are endless. No, that’s romance. That’s a lie. Memphis is music to fall asleep to and to wake up to and to break up to. Memphis is music for the masses though you’re one of the few who will ever read this. Memphis is me and my friend Chris who I love and it’s an attempt to reflect beauty back into the world, and it’s a pop song. Memphis is a pop song…or two.
A little convoluted at the beginning, but when you get to the end you figure it out and the whole movie makes sense.
Basically four (or five/six?/can’t remember exactly) other people were shot (but not killed, according to the post script, although it seemed like one character was definitely pretty close to dead!) when Bobby Kennedy was shot / it was in a crowd. So the movie follows those characters throughout their entire day until the shooting. So at first, I GUESS I can see why people are confused because it doesn’t come clear why you are following those specific characters until they get shot at the end.
But why does it have to be clear? Whatever, I didn’t have a problem with that myself.
So what is the point of that set-up? The point is that each of those people had hopes and dreams about the future, and Bobby Kennedy represented at least one little part of their hopes & dreams. That so many people lost something that day / not just the OBVIOUS. That an event like that can turn your life upside down whether or not you’re political and whether or not you agreed with his stance. And that, overall, in the big scheme of things, it was a huge moment. Arguably huger than his brother’s shooting, because his brother’s shooting is part of the history. Because it was the SECOND time. Because it closely followed MLK’s shooting. Because these things don’t just happen to one person / they happen to all of us / and there is/was a cumulative effect flowing through those years.
Because sometimes what someone stands for is so much bigger than who they were.

Friday Night Lights. Love the stories, love the acting. And football is really just the backdrop. Completely obsessed with this show. Am completely torn between marrying Matt Saracen and just having a drunken crazy sex fling with Tim Riggins.
Grey’s Anatomy. Has not missed a beat. Every episode gives me something to hang on to. Bailey is rocking out even moreso this year. Carolyn is happy.
Standoff. “VM for adults.” Haven’t erased a single one off the DVR. Like the filler characters a lot as well.
Bones. A forensic procedural with more humor, more chemistry, and more goofy than the others. “CSI for happ(ier) people.”
Written & directed by Joey Lauren Adams, “Amy” of “Chasing Amy”. Starring Ashley Judd, who was really wonderful here.
It’s a small film. A “coming into one’s own” film (rather than “coming of age”). A film about, really, just one moment / one turning point. Realizing that you have to make your own choices. That you can’t rely on old crutches, or blame other people and the past they’ve saddled you with for the decisions you’re making today.
A small, quiet movie. But moving. Well directed, well acted. Well worth the admission.
Well worth the drive to Highland Park, somewhere neither of us had ever been, to go to this last night as it was only playing at 4:10 in the city. Somehow we made it before the previews were even over despite getting lost in suburbia.
Went to see a couple of goofball male folk singers with Amanda the other night. Both have really deep husky voices Both are extremely talented guitar players. Both poked fun both in song and in banter at the current administration. Very enjoyable!
Amanda has a big crush on Mulvey and I have to say the man did have a very chiseled jaw bone and a very subtle sleepy sexiness. Like old Clooney before he got the ego to match.
Smither’s song “Origin of Species” had some of the best lyrics I’ve ever heard:

A really sadistic sadomasochistic beating scene that I can only imagine made all the men in the audience cringe with sympathy pain.
It was pretty good. Not a GREAT FLICK by any means, but very enjoyable. Daniel Craig is pretty yummy, even bloody and battered. (As some of us like to say, “I’d tap that.”)
